A Balance: Magic, Shmagic

In my previous post I proposed that a thought form of a fictional character could exist. In this post I’m going to go in the opposite direction and put the blog’s feet back onto some solid ground. This post could also be viewed as a bit of venting.

For awhile there, so-called “spell books” were pretty big sellers. It seemed like everyone was publishing some sort of “book of shadows” filled with rymes and suggestions of silly behavior that was supposed to make the person get their way. There was so much of it, in fact, that you can’t really take anything that you read today seriously.

What 99% of it boiled down to was being nonsensical self help books. These were books that were written to help people improve their self-esteem and their willingness to go out and do something. There was nothing “magicy” about them.

Page after page would have “spells” to get lovers, to get a job, to “glamour” others so that they respected you more. It’s nothing but mental masturbation.

The person doing that stuff may feel like they’re doing something special, but in truth they’re just tricking themselves into feeling more secure.

Trying to get a better job? Doing the so-called “spell” would give the person the feeling that they’re going to succeed, and the employer interviewing them would notice that behavior. A “go get them”, successful attitude is said to be important when you’re on a job interview.

Looking to get a date? An air of confidence, to a certain extent, is an attractive thing. It suggests maturity in the person. The nonsense in those books is about as magical as a few sips of alcohol. Saying a few rymes and performing a few silly gestures before going out would make them loosen up around folks, and give them a bit more confidence in themselves.

Some would ask, “but if it helps them, isn’t that magical?”. The answer to that is No!

Self help books are fine. Self important self help books that try to play mental trickery on the reader are not. It’s not magical, it’s a form of self hypnosis at best but saying that is giving those books too much credit.

On that note, I’ll close this post.
