EQ2 “Extreme Quality” and “High Quality” Screenshot Comparison

Since I can still post if I stop the loading of the page I’ll go ahead and post these two screen shots. The images will be stored on imageshack since they’ll certainly vanish after a few weeks if uploaded to wordpress.com

Here are two screenshots from EverQuest 2 that were taken on 12/10/2005. One is taken at so-called “Extreme Quality” level and the other is taken at “High Quality”. Generally speaking I run the game at High Quality, though there are times (especially in Qeynos) that I set it to Balanced due to performance problems.

Keep in mind that these images have been compressed and resized. Though to be honest I haven’t been very impressed with EverQuest 2’s “Extreme Quality” setting…

Update: Go here to see a large uncompressed “High Quality” screenshot of Coen at Flickr.com.

There is more detail on the character model in High Quality than there is in Extreme Quality. My best guess as to why is because my 3D card has 256 MBs of video memory and Extreme Quality was designed for 3D cards with 512 MBs of v.vram. Therefore, there may not be enough memory on the graphics card to contain all of the textures, and the runes on the character would take a lesser priority than the shadows and textures in the game world.

Then again, that’s just a guess.

Anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering options are set to “application controlled” in the driver’s options. So there will no doubt be jaggies.

WordPress.com – Very Difficult To Post

I find myself in the odd position of using a free service and yet seeing the need to complain about it.

There is the old problem of the images vanishing that still seems to exist (that or they deliberately delete images without saying that they do so), the time stamp on every new post is set to a point of over 20 years ago (one has to select the option to edit the timestamp to prevent this), and now it’s difficult to post at all.

There’s a script on WordPress.com that loads two tabs in the top right corner. The loading of these two tabs hangs constantly, and on the page for entering a post this causes the wysiwyg editor to hang. There used to be an option to disable the editor but now I can’t find that option anywhere. Either I’m half asleep or they’ve removed it. Either is quite possible.

So I find myself annoyed and wondering how this post is going to turn out.
